Bonita Jalane: Healing Through Music and Self-Love

Bonita Jalane has never been interested in a safety net. The Brooklyn-born, Atlanta-based singer-songwriter is an award-winning, charting independent R&B/Soul artist and a Recording Academy voting member. She is building a career on her own terms, with a sound that blends soul, jazz, hip hop, and gospel influences. Her latest album, 'Kept Kissing Frogs,' has surpassed 430,000 streams across platforms, and her singles "So High" and "i love myself" have gained radio recognition and airplay.

Jalane keeps her description of her music simple: "I describe it as feel-good, nostalgic, healing music that makes you feel something." Her powerful vocals carry stories rooted in personal experience, faith, and self-love, which gives her work an authenticity that listeners can recognize.

That authenticity has roots in her early years. She began her career singing with rappers, often performing songs about experiences she hadn’t lived. "I started off singing about things that I didn’t really know." When she began writing and recording her own material, her music evolved into the honest storytelling she is known for today.

The album grew out of her own healing process. As she worked through her experiences, Jalane noticed how many people shared them. "I just wanted a place where I could speak," she explains, describing a project that tells a story "from the beginning to the end."

The title carries a deeper meaning in the acronym F.R.O.G., which stands for Forgive, Release, Overcome, Grow. Jalane emphasizes that the message goes well beyond romance. "People think it’s just about romantic and kissing and finding a prince. It’s more about finding yourself and finding healing within that moment." Her own heartaches stem from relationships, business, and friendships alike. Moving forward, she believes, means forgiving others and yourself, releasing the energy, and overcoming feelings instead of carrying them along.

After an 11-year corporate career, Jalane made a decision many artists only talk about: she stepped away from the stability of a paycheck to pursue music full-time. She remains grateful for those years, noting that her corporate career helped finance her music up to this point. Still, she felt she had given enough of herself to others. "I owed it to myself to not have a plan B, to only bet on myself and have me be the plan A."

Navigating the Challenges of Independence

A year into life as a full-time independent artist, she describes the experience as both demanding and rewarding. "It’s a lot of hats. Independence means handling creative work, marketing, financing, directing, and producing, which I call 'a gift and a curse.'" She is also clear that she doesn’t do it alone. "Even though you’re an independent artist, a lot of things you still need help with," she says of the team she has built around her. The groundwork she laid while still working, she believes, is why doors are now opening.

As of October 28th, 'Kept Kissing Frogs' had reached 430,000 streams, up from 400,000 not long before. Her goal is to hit 500,000 before the year ends. What moves her most is the global reach. Every day, she sees "10 to 20 people from all over the world" listening, which feels like proof that betting on herself is working. "I’m finally getting my flowers."

For Jalane, music is also a tool for mental health and self-love. She calls it "the biggest love language" and believes it can speak when words fail. It has helped her cope, connect with others, and share a story that might help someone else on a different part of their journey.

Live performance remains central to her purpose. "It’s more than music to me; it’s about purpose," she says, considering the legacy she will leave. She is realistic about her ambitions: "I don’t feel like I’m going to change the world, but if my little part of sharing my music and my story can help somebody get through their day a little bit easier, then that’s my goal."

Beyond the Spotlight

As the industry continues to evolve, Jalane’s advice to herself and other artists is to give yourself grace and avoid comparison. "I don’t have to worry about what anybody else is doing because I know what I am," she asserts. Her art is interpretive, and she trusts that her tribe will find her.
