2027 WNBA Power Rankings: Valkyries Lead the Way Amid Offseason Uncertainties

The 2026 WNBA season ended in dramatic fashion when the Golden State Valkyries pulled off a second-half comeback to defeat the Atlanta Dream in Game 7 of the Finals, clinching the first title in franchise history. As fans eagerly await the start of the 2027 season, CBS Sports has released its way-too-early power rankings, providing a glimpse into what’s to come in the league.

The Valkyries, who defied expectations to win their first championship in just their second season, have made history as the fastest new franchise to secure a title in major North American professional sports. With a stellar defense and a strong team culture, they are poised for even greater success in 2027. Key players Kayla Thornton and Tiffany Hayes are unrestricted free agents, but the team is expected to bolster their roster by utilizing cap space to sign a max player, addressing their offensive struggles from the previous season.

Meanwhile, the Dream, who came heartbreakingly close to winning their first title, are determined to return to the Finals next season. Despite their historical 0-4 record in Finals appearances, the team remains optimistic. With most of their rotation under contract through at least 2027 and the return of Brionna Jones from injury, they are set to compete once again.

The Mystics made a strong push towards the playoffs, finishing with a 14-4 record after the All-Star break, tied for the best in the league during that span. Although they faced a first-round exit against the Dream, their young roster and elite defense signal a promising future. With a potential No. 1 overall lottery pick from the Chicago Sky, the Mystics are well-positioned to continue their upward trajectory.

On the other hand, the Liberty face significant questions as they look to rebound from an eighth-place finish and early playoff exit. The core trio of Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones, and Sabrina Ionescu, all signed through 2028, provides some stability, but the team is on the hunt for a new head coach after parting ways with Chris DeMarco. Their ability to stay healthy will be crucial as they aim to return to championship form.

The Lynx, who earned the No. 1 seed in the playoffs for the second consecutive season, will need to regroup after being swept in the first round. With star forward Napheesa Collier's future uncertain as she enters free agency, the team must navigate a pivotal offseason to build around Rookie of the Year Olivia Miles while maintaining their competitive edge.

Challenges Ahead for Contending Teams

The Aces, who were eliminated in the semifinals, will look to regroup as reigning MVP A'ja Wilson leads the charge. However, questions loom about the future of key players like Jackie Young, who is also a free agent, and NaLyssa Smith, who is recovering from a knee injury. The team's ability to retain talent and fill gaps will be crucial for their success in 2027.

The Fever, despite boasting the best offense in 2026, face a challenging offseason after being ousted by the Aces. With major decisions looming regarding their front office and key players, they must address their defensive shortcomings and depth issues while navigating a salary cap crunch.

The Wings, who nearly upset the Valkyries in the playoffs, showed promise with a significant improvement in their win total. With a core that remains intact and two first-round picks, they have the potential to build on their success and make a deeper playoff run next season.

Beyond the Spotlight

The Fire exceeded expectations last season but still have work to do as they look to add talent through the draft. The Tempo, after a disastrous inaugural season, are hoping to secure a top pick to revamp their roster. Meanwhile, the Mercury and Sky are both trying to bounce back from disappointing campaigns, with the Mercury needing to re-sign key player Kelsey Plum to avoid further setbacks.

Lastly, the Storm and Sparks are in rebuilding phases, with the Storm looking to add young talent to their roster and the Sparks searching for a new coach to end their playoff drought. As the WNBA landscape shifts heading into the 2027 season, all eyes will be on how these teams navigate the offseason and position themselves for success.
